A tour in Bulgaria should include a visit to Etara, the architectural and ethnographic open-air museum near the city of Gabrovo. Etara represents the city life of Gabrovo region in the second half of XVIII c. and XIX c - the time of Bulgarian Renaissance. At that period the town of Gabrovo was a flourishing trade and handicraft center. More than 20 different crafts were practiced here - coppersmith, knife smith, potter, blacksmith, wood smith, goldsmith and others. These handmade wares were sold at big markets in Bucharest, Vienna, Marsilia, Anadola.
The exposition of Etara museum includes traditional Bulgarian houses from the Revival Period, a street with craftsmen’s shops where the successors of Renaissance craftsmen demonstrate their skills and the symbol of Bulgarian Revival Architecture - the clock tower. Walking along the museum is an unforgettable experience feeling the spirit of the old days and enjoying the amazing atmosphere. Don’t forget to try the famous white jam and to drink a cup of traditionally made coffee on hot sand.
