Perperikon
Perperikon is one of a kind megalith complex, dated back by the time of Troy and Micenna civilizations.Called "The Rocky Town of Thracians", this was probably the famous in Antiquity Dionysius's prophesy temple
One of the recently discovered historical monuments of world importance in Bulgaria is Perperikon- the rocky town of Thracians. Scientists have dated this megalith complex by the time of Troy and Micenna civilizations (XVIII-XII c. B.C.). And there are evidences that the complex have functioned until XIV c. A.D.
Perperikon consists of a big megalith sanctuary, a holy town and a fortress. It is believed that this was the famous in Antiquity Dionysius’s prophesy temple. The Thracian tribe Bessy made their faith rituals here. According to historical sources even Alexander the Great came here to ask the Gods if his campaigns will be successful.
The importance of Perperikon didn’t decrease in Christianity ages. Archeologists found relics of early Christian’s churches in the rocky town and its area dated from V-VI c. And in XIII-XIV c. it became an Episcopal center of the East Roman Empire (Byzantium).
Today sightseeing in Perperikon is important part of each tour exploring Thracian and Bulgarian culture and history.
