Thracian tomb of Sveshtari
This one of a kind tomb is unique with carved figures of 10 caryatids(half-woman,half-plant). It dates from IIIc. B.C. and it's an UNESCO monument.
Travel to Bulgaria to see the Thracian tomb of Sveshtari - a site included in UNESCO’s list of World Cultural Heritage. It dates from III c B.C and is situated near the village of Sveshtari, in northeast Bulgaria, lands inhabited by the Thracian tribe Getes in Antiquity. The ruler who was probably buried in that tomb was the Getes’ king Dromihed.
The tomb was robbed in Antiquity but its value as a cultural and historical monument is due to its unique architecture and decoration. It consists of three chambers and a corridor leading to the tomb. The most interesting is the burial chamber decorated with carved figures of 10 caryatids (half-woman, half-plant) with raised arms, which support the vault. All caryatids have different faces. Researchers of Thracian culture consider these caryatids represent the 10 stages of so called Thracian Orphism- the Thracian faith in immortality.
